Walking with Grace: Natalie Taylor

Bob Dylan once said, “The highest purpose of art is to inspire.”

This quote not only serves as a daily mantra at Grit & Grace Studio, it is also a key part of our manifesto. We are blessed to be surrounded by fellow artists who inspire us daily, and Charleston artist Natalie Taylor is one of our great rays of sunshine.

When we say that Natalie Taylor’s work inspires us daily, we mean this in a literal sense: if you’ve visited our King Street Flagship store (come see us!), you’ve probably found yourself smitten with and possibly taking a selfie against Natalie’s stunning, shimmering abstract mural that adorns the studio.

Natalie Taylor’s work is so captivating and empowering, she was one of Rachel’s first calls as we began charting a course for the Grit & Grace Cottage. (Stay tuned for more exciting updates and finished pictures of the newest Art by Natalie Taylor mural!)

These ethereal murals and moving portraits are a mirror of the graceful and powerful woman behind the paintbrush, and we are so honored to feature Natalie Taylor in today’s Walking with Grace interview.

How did you find your voice as an artist?

My artistic voice evolves as I do. I try to notice patterns in myself.

Aesthetically, what do I find myself drawn to over and over again? Conceptually, what do I find myself connecting with? What holds my attention and inspires creative thoughts?

These interests, paired with my intuition and life experiences, allow me to create unique work.

You’ve created some really beautiful, strong work around women and femininity. What drives these pieces?

I can identify with both. I am a woman who feels comfortable in a feminine lifestyle. It’s an honest feeling to reflect through my art.

The women in my family, female friends, and the women I look up to have shown resilience in overcoming obstacles and trying times, all while retaining compassion and composure. There’s so much remarkable beauty to witness in all women. Creating this work helps me to gain confidence and strength. My hope is that it encourages others to find theirs.

Talk to us about the creative process. How do you stay inspired, even during chaotic times?

Where to begin on describing the process! It is truly a self-motivated endeavor. I wish I could say that I’m covered up to my elbows every day in paint, but there is much more involved in running an art business than just putting paint to canvas.

Part of the process is wearing all the hats! It entails constructing wood panels, emailing, shipping, updating my website, taking and editing photos of my work and the process, creating quotes and commissions, developing and creating my online gallery work, marketing, creating interesting content; the list goes on. When it comes to solely creating art, though, I usually start with a simple sketch when inspiration strikes to kick off a project.

I lean into my interests and listen to my body to stay inspired during the painting process, especially these days. Partnering with fellow artists and brands (even if it had to be at a distance) has been a great way to keep a sense of normalcy, meet new people, and have unexpected opportunities.

The waterway mural project at the Grit & Grace AirBnB Cottage is a perfect example of that! Inspiration comes in escapism too— like walks in nature, bike rides, paddle-boarding in the creeks, cooking, listening to music, and watching a good film. Breathwork and yoga help to keep my body feeling fresh to tackle whatever the day will ask of me.

Who are three other female artists that you’d like to lift up?

While listening to The Jealous Curator’s podcast, I was introduced to New Orleans artist Ashley Longshore. I consider Ashley a role model and can’t get enough of the encouragement she gives to her audience. I admire her energetic words, positive outlooks, and unapologetic work.

Local Charleston artist Sam Rueter has beautiful and thought-provoking paintings. I respect how she lifts others up, too, and allows for progressive conversation on her platform. Australian artist Emma Gale inspires me with her concepts, colors, and narrative compositions.

What’s next for you?

The holidays! I will continue to have artwork available in the upcoming season with fun content and deals for potential and returning collectors.

I also offer custom commissions, custom portraits, and in-person portrait sessions. For 2021 and beyond, there are a few exciting projects developing — as the cards say, “What Must Be, Shall Be.”
