Meet the Mermaids: Shayla

We believe in artists and dreamers, movers and shakers, and those who dare challenge traditions and think outside the box.

At Grit & Grace, we are a family of powerful individuals, each exploring and changing the world in their own way. Today, we celebrate one of our Grit & Grace team members, a compelling and inspiring artist in her own right, Shayla!

Shayla creates thought-provoking, beautiful works of art, and she always brightens our studio with her calming, intuitive presence. Shayla recently received a grant for her artwork, and we are so proud of this inspiring individual.

Shayla, your presence on our team encourages us to expand our horizons and look at the world from fresh perspectives. We are so excited about this new chapter in your creative journey!

Grit & Grace Family: Shayla

How did you come to join the Grit & Grace family?

I wanted a change of pace, so I started looking for more creative opportunities in my hometown. I have always wanted a job where I could utilize my artistic skills, and Grit & Grace was perfect for that.

What’s your favorite Grit & Grace product?

My favorite product would have to be the Ocean Painted Dishes because I love how unique every single one is. They are also extremely fun to make.

What does having “grit” mean to you?

Having "grit" to me means that you are always persevering. You never let anything stop you or discourage you from reaching your goals.

You’re an artist! Tell us about your work and preferred medium.

I specialize in portraiture because I love how much we can display how we feel through our facial expressions. I like to capture these feelings in my work. I prefer to use marker, ink, and acrylic paint.

What inspires your artwork?

My life experiences as a young black woman and the experiences of those I have encountered inspire me to create art.

What are some of your favorite galleries or music venues in Charleston?

Redux Contemporary Art Center is a really cool gallery to visit.

You’re meeting a friend for lunch. What are three of your go-to spots in town?

My top three in town would have to be Xiao Bao Biscuit, Dashi, and Bon Bahn Mi.
